The village of Yametung is home to various ethnic groups residing in the Shan state border town between Myanmar and Thailand. Of the 20,000 people in Yametung there are many traders who are attracted to the huge market used for selling inexpensive local goods like cloth, alcohol, jewelry, fruits and electronics – imported from China. Located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, the area is a hotbed of drug-related crimes that affect both adults and children.

Aye* is a young girl from the Akka tribe, who has just entered her teens. At 13 years old, she has spent six years getting used to the fact that her father died. Together with her brothers, they tried to get used to their new life with their stepfather but things soon turned sour. Aye quit school for a year to stay at home and help her mother take care of her younger brother but the situation changed completely when her mother learned Aye was being abused by her stepfather.

Aye was sent to her aunt, who is a Christian. Her aunt heard about the Joyce Meyer Ministries’ Hand of Hope Children’s Home and knew it was the best place for Aye to spend the rest of her childhood years.

At the Children’s Home, Aye received the best news she heard in a very long time – she was going back to school! She understands the value of a good education since half the children in Yametung village do not attend school due to the lack of money. She loves helping the other children with their homework and makes sure she finishes her own right after her last class is over. Reading books and singing Sunday School songs in English are her favorite activities and she has improved considerably in them since she joined the home. She dreams of becoming a lawyer one day and thanks to the education and support she receives at the Hand of Hope Children’s Home, she knows it is possible.
